![]() Contra 4 could probably be thrown into that mix as well, since it was the first original throw-back to 16-bit-era Contra games after two generations of generally poor Playstation renditions. I have the N64-era revamped Robotron, Space Invaders Extreme on the DS, and spent time with Namco's other modern take on a classic, Galaga Championship Edition. I'm pretty familiar with a few retro-revivals from the past few years and some others. The pictures looked pretty cool and it has been a popular featured item on the Xbox 360's discounts and deals, so I snagged it. Prior to downloading this gem on my Xbox360, I only saw it in pictures and heard that it garnered some solid reviews. Game modes include time trials split into short stints and longer runs, a ghost combo mode where the aim is to eat as many ghosts as possible within a combo limit, and the return of score attack (score the highest number of points in either a 5-minute or 10-minute run). There are nine different styles of mazes to run through, varying from Spiral which has a number of said spirals that can easily trap you inside, or highway which is full of long straights running across the maze. The high tempo music and neon stylings return, along with new graphic-based references to other past Pac-Man games with differing looks to the central character and the ghosts themselves. There are a vast number of game modes and visual styles, following the graphical overhaul made by Pac-Man: Championship Edition. The speed will also suddenly slow down to a 'bullet time' like effect if you're too close to a ghost, giving you a chance to evade and continue on without losing a life. Pick up and use a bomb, and all the ghosts on the playfield will be shot back to the central holding area for a few seconds. There are now two defensive tactics that can help you along the way as well. Eat a power pellet and you can turn that line of ghosts into a massive points score, which in turn increases the speed of play. Unlike past editions or the original itself, Championship Edition DX twist the game's style in a new direction, where the playfield is littered with hundreds of ghosts that, when awoken as you move past, follow you in a conga line. It's a Pac-Man game in looks, but not entirely in gameplay.
